Middle School Science

The eighth grade is ending this quarter with the study of animals. We began with sponges and worms and will end with birds and mammals. In conjunction with our study of amphibians and reptiles, the students were given the assignment to choose a reptile or amphibian to research and present this information in a power point presentation. They were given research questions to include in their reports and instruction from Mrs. Mirscov and I in the computer lab. The students will present these using the projector and we are anxious to learn about twenty-six different animals in these categories. Finally, the eighth grade will be learning how to dissect a frog utilizing an interactive website. After we have learned the proper procedures we will all dissect one bullfrog.

The seventh grade is ending this quarter with the study of plants. We began with viruses, bacteria, protests, and fungi and will end with plants. We have looked at algae and plant cells using our microscopes. In conjunction with our study of plants, the students were given the assignment to choose a plant to research and present this information in a powerpoint presentation. They were given specific criteria to include in their reports and instruction was provided in the computer lab with Mrs. Mirscov and I. We will conclude the year with the a more in depth study of Seed Plants. We will investigate different kinds of seeds under our microscopes.

The sixth grade ends the final quarter with the study of the human body. We have investigated our nervous system, and our endocrine system. We discussed how our senses gather information and send messages to our central nervous system. We have engaged in experiments that investigated our temperature sensors in our hands. We have also looked at our other sensory organs to discover how we gather and interpret varying sensory information. We will conclude this study with drugs, alcohol, and tobacco and how these substances affect the body systems.
