October is dedicated to Our Blessed Mother, Queen of the Universe and the Rosary. The students have made rosaries. They have been praying the Rosary every Friday after Mass. This experience brings our Catholic rituals to life and instills the Rosary as an important part of our Catholicity.
The students are reading the novel To Kill a Mocking Bird. The title has meaning in the novel and if one notes, Atticus' last name is Finch. Students have found several idioms such as: made a pile, acid tongue, in a blaze of glory, and get someone's goat.
Students make Paul's journey come alive in Religion class. Various groups tracked Paul's journey and made a travel log, skit, book, and other creative projects.
The first quarter book project was a letter to the author of the book that the student read. The student 'critiqued' the author. The letter was to include praise, question, and polish. First the student praised the author. Some praises were: "It was an absolutely magnificent book", "I loved your book. It was so good that I could not put it down.", and "I liked this book so much because I feel like I can relate to Chris McCandless". Second part consisted of the student asking a question. Some questions were: "What inspired you to write this book?", "I just wanted to know what gave you the idea to write about a vampire and a girl falling in love?", and "What was suppose to be the fascination with the rock shaped like god's thumb?". In the third part the sudents suggested polish to the author's writing.
The class will escort the kindergarten class to a pumpkin patch. The students are learning responsibility and setting an example to the younger students by helping the kindergarteners.
Happy October days to you! Remember the average day for the first frost in Missouri is the 29th of October.
