Religion:

The first graders have been working hard to prepare for our first mass on Wednesday, February 10. We are very excited about our first mass and we hope that you can come to mass with us at 8:30.

Reading/Phonics:

Our phonics skill that we are working on this week is long /o/ o_e. Here are some long o words to practice at home: bone, cone, hope, rope, poke, stroke, rose, close, home, hole, globe, drove. The high frequency words this week are: sparkled, saw, opened, soon, every, any, floating.

Grammar/Writing Workshop:

This week we are learning about was and were. The students will be learning when to use these words in sentences and how to use the words.

Math:

We are finished with graphing and we are working on addition and subtraction facts. We will be working on addition facts with sums up to 20 and subtracting from 20 or less.

Spelling:

The spelling test will be on Friday, February 12. The words are: joke, woke, nose, hose, note, vote, every, any.

Social Studies:

In social studies, the children will be learning about past, present, and future. The children will be making timelines that tell about their past, present and future.

Science:

This week in science we are learning about hibernation and migration. We will be talking about different types of animals that hibernate or migrate and why they do this.

Valentines:

Students can bring in Valentines to pass out to the class on Friday, February 12. Please send in a Valentine for every child in the class. There are 28 children in the class. Please do not send any candy with nuts. We will decorate bags to put our Valentines in so you do not need to bring one from home.

Have a great week,

Miss Franke and Mrs. Zaiz
