What’s Happening in Room Q

November 16-25, 2009

Religion:

In religion we will be learning about the Church year. We will also be taking some time to think about the things that we are thankful for. Thanksgiving is a great time to stop and think about all the wonderful things God has blessed us with.

Reading/Phonics:

In reading and phonics, we will be focusing on the short u sounds. Here are some short u words to practice at home: us, cup, up, bus, bug, dug, fun, run, but, cut, mud, and rub. A fun way to practice words at home is playing tick tack toe. Make a tick tack toe board and write a word in each square, then take turns picking a square and reading the word in the square. The person who gets three in a row first is the winner. We play this in reading class and the students really like it. The high frequency words that we are working on are: want, put, show, under, three, make.

Grammar:

We will be focusing on proper nouns. The students will learn that a proper noun names a particular person, place, or pet. The children will also learn that proper nouns begin with capital letters.

Math:

In math we will be taking a test on addition fact to 12 on Thursday, November 19. Our next unit is on subtraction facts to 12. The children are very excited to start subtraction because they get to play new math games.

Spelling:

We have a spelling test on Friday, November 20. We will not have spelling test next week. The words are: nut, cut, rug, bug, run, fun, under, put.

Social Studies:

In social studies we will be learning about the first Thanksgiving.

Special Announcement:

Next Wednesday, November 25 we will be helping our sixth grade buddies at mass. We would love for you to come celebrate this special Thanksgiving mass with us at 8:30. This is the first mass that we will be doing with our sixth grade buddies. If your child does not have a part in this mass s/he will get a turn to help with another mass. I will send home a note to let you know if you child has a part in the Thanksgiving mass.

We hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!!

Have a great week,

Miss Franke and Mrs. Zaiz
